New Jersey Lighthouses

THE SANDYHOOK LIGHTHOUSE
By Craig Whitmore

On the Jersey shore, stands the oldest, operational lighthouse in the United States. It is the Sandy Hook lighthouse.
In 1764, Issac Comaro built the Sandy Hook lighthouse. It survived the Revolutionary war.
This structure is a little shorter because of erosion and its age. The lighthouse board reported that this fine lighthouse is in good shape.
The tower has two beacons and in 1556 the board placed a third order lens on the tower, where it has remained. It remains a remarkable monument to the United States of America.

The Absecon Lighthouse
By Laura Gabrielson

One of the most frequently visited lighthouses is the Absecon lighthouse, because it is located in Atlantic City New Jersey. The Absecon lighthouse was completed on January 15,1858. It is a stone foundation resting on a wood platform. It guided ships past the rough Absecon and Brigantine shoals. The lighthouse was discontinued in July 1933. Plans for restoring the lighthouse, including the reconstruction of the original light keeper's house, is in the works. The Absecon lighthouse continues to be a proud symbol of Atlantic City.

The Barnegat Lighthouse
By Melissa Geldhauser

The Barnegat Lighthouse is located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in New Jersey. Winslo Lewis built the lighthouse and it is about 45 miles away from Sandy Hook.

Many people don't know this, but the Barnegat Lighthouse is not the original. The ocean knocked down the original lighthouse. They built a new one 900 feet back from the old one.
The Lighthouse is owned by the state of New Jersey, and is in the middle of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. The Barnegat Lighthouse can be climbed during the summer season.

It has always been an attention getting landmark as well. People come to see it because of the interesting operations of the light. Another reason is the view of the sea, bay, and country.
