The Cat in the Lighthouse
By Jameson Loyal

My family and I live in a lighthouse, and we had a cat.  He was so cute and smart.  His name was Pumpkin.  The cat ran up and down in the lighthouse all day long.
One day Pumpkin went up into the lighthouse and it was getting dark.  Pumpkin usually came down before dark.  I thought he got lost or ran away.  I heard a noise, so I started to go up the lighthouse steps.
As I got closer, the noise got louder.  It was spooky, and since it was the night before Halloween, I was really scared.
Suddenly, Pumpkin came rushing down, I was so happy.
Now, every night before Halloween, Pumpkin stays up for a long time.  No one knows what happened or what was up there, and I never want to know.

The Tale of Fire Island
By Ali Bodkin

Ali, her mom and her sister lived in a lighthouse called Fire Island Lighthouse.  It was very pretty.
One day their mom went by boat to get some food.  It was morning, Ali and her sister were upstairs cleaning the light.  Then they went downstairs and said, "Mom, Mom," but nobody said a word.  They looked out the window, but their mom was already gone.
Suddenly, a storm was coming and their mom was still in the boat.  Ali and Lauren were crying, because it was night and their mom still hadn't returned.  Since they knew how important the light was, they turned it on so their mom and the other ships would not bang into the rocks.  They didn't go to bed until their mom returned home.  The two girls had saved many ships and also their mom.

The Tale of Nayatt Point
By Mike Barry

We are leaving today.  I am extremely excited.  This has been my dream all my life.  My name is William Hall.  My wife Sandra, my son Jake and I are going out to Nayatt Point.  We are the new keepers, or should I say, I am the new Keeper.  The previous keeper had just disappeared one day, never to be seen again.  Most likely, he was drowned at sea, but nobody really knows.
We are now on the boat called the Nayatt Ferry.  Jake gets motion sick.  He has puked twice already.  We still have a half hour or so until we get there.  It seems like much farther than that though.  I'll be extremely grateful when I can get off of this crazy boat.  Jake is driving me mad.
Finally we have arrived!  There is much work to be done.  The place is a wreck.  We have to fix it all up.  Where do we start?  Oh, well.  There is plenty of time to worry about that.  We aren't going anywhere.
Within a month, we had the place looking as good as new and we were all happy with our new dwelling.
Epilogue:  Sandra and William lived into their 80's.  Jake lived to be 92, and has children who took over the light.

The Best of Friends
By Michael Ryan

One glorious July day a ship pulled into the harbor.  The men on the ship had been best friends for the longest time, since second grade in fact.  The men had never stayed with each other for an extended amount of time.  As you know, no matter how good friends you are, you will eventually get sick of each other.  Well, this is a somewhat common case of that.
"We finally made it to our favorite lighthouse of all time, New London Light Harbor."
"I don't know about this, Joe, it's kind of run down and creepy, don't you think," Willie said.
"Oh, come on Willie, it was built in 1909.  If it's held up this long, it will hold up a little while longer,"Joe replied.
As time went on, they got used to the creaky stairs, the noisy doors and all the other strange stuff in that old lighthouse.  Although, the one thing they did get sick of was each other.
Sometimes Joe would go outside the lighthouse onto the rocks.  He called this his "happy place".  Nothing ever bothered him out there, nobody bothering him, just the soothing sound of the gulls, and watching the waves crash down onto the shore.
One day Willie went into town to get some things.  This was the perfect time to go to his "happy place".  Willie didn't even know about the place. (That was the best part about it).  So Joe went out there and he decided he wanted to venture to the rocks beyond his usual place.  Joe slipped on those rocks and fell to the ocean below.  His swimming skills could not help him; he was not breathing.
When Willie got home and couldn't find Joe, he went outside and, sure enough, Joe's body was washed up against the rocks.  His best friend was dead!
Willie had trouble forgetting his friend, and decided to stay on at the lighthouse to always be near the place where his friend had drowned. He was sorry for all the times he had argued with him.
